Why a Bear Is Mistaken for a Dog

Bears can look like large, shaggy dogs when seen from a distance, especially in low light or through vegetation. Their movement, head shape, and fur texture can create a misleading impression, leading people to misidentify them as domestic dogs or large pets.

Key Differences Between Bears and Dogs

Bears are much taller at the shoulder, have a distinct shoulder hump, longer claws, and a more rounded, bulky body. Dogs have a narrower snout, shorter claws, and a different gait. A bear’s tracks are also wider and show prominent claw marks compared to most dog prints.

What to Do If You See a Bear

Never approach or try to feed a bear, even if it looks like a stray dog. Keep a safe distance, avoid direct eye contact, and back away slowly. If the animal is in a residential area, contact local wildlife authorities or animal control for safe removal guidance.
