How Often Do Coyotes Kill Humans

Coyote attacks on humans are rare. Fatal attacks are extremely uncommon and are documented only a few times in North America. Most encounters do not result in serious injury.

Why Coyote Attacks Can Occur

Attacks are more likely when coyotes become habituated to people, often due to food access or intentional feeding. Sick or injured animals, especially those with rabies, may behave unpredictably. Small children and pets can be at higher risk in some settings.

Prevention and Response

To reduce risk, avoid feeding wildlife, secure trash and pet food, and supervise children and pets outdoors. If a coyote approaches, make noise, appear large, and back away slowly. Report aggressive or bold coyotes to local wildlife or animal control authorities.
