What Is a Glacier Bear

The glacier bear, or blue glacier bear, is a rare color morph of the black bear found in coastal Alaska and parts of British Columbia. It has a bluish-gray coat caused by a genetic trait. Glacier bears behave like other black bears and are not a separate species.

Do Glacier Bears Attack Humans

Glacier bear attacks on humans are extremely rare. Most black bears avoid people. Attacks usually occur when a bear is surprised, feels threatened, or is attracted by food. In the backcountry, proper behavior greatly reduces any risk of conflict.

How to Prevent and Survive an Encounter

Store food in bear canisters or hang it away from camp. Make noise on trails, travel in groups, and keep dogs leashed. If a glacier bear approaches, stand your ground, speak calmly, and back away slowly. If attacked, fight back with rocks, sticks, or bare hands, and target the nose and face.
