Documented Escape Attempts from Alcatraz

Between 1934 and 1963, there were 36 recorded escape attempts involving 144 inmates at Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. The Federal Bureau of Prisons classified these attempts as either successful escapes, recaptures, or deaths during the attempt. Official records show that no inmate was ever confirmed to have successfully escaped and remained free.

Outcomes and Official Records

Of the 36 attempts, most inmates were recaptured quickly. Some were killed during the attempt, and a few remain officially listed as missing and presumed drowned. The Bureau of Prisons documented each case in its annual reports, which are referenced by the National Park Service in its historical summaries of Alcatraz.

Why Escape Was Extremely Difficult

Alcatraz was designed with reinforced steel, strong currents, and constant surveillance. The cold water, distance from shore, and limited access to tools made a successful escape nearly impossible. The island is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and visitor centers provide access to the official prison records and historical exhibits.
