What Is Antifa?
Antifa is a loosely organized, far-left movement opposed to fascism, white supremacy, and other forms of extremism. The name is short for anti-fascist and describes a decentralized network of activists rather than a single group.
Is Antifa Officially a Terrorist Organization?
Antifa is not designated as a terrorist organization by the United States government, the European Union, or the United Nations. While some individuals have been arrested for violent acts, the movement as a whole lacks a formal leadership structure and is not listed in official terrorism databases.
Why the Debate Continues
Public debate often focuses on property damage and street clashes attributed to some antifa activists. Governments and researchers note that labeling movements requires clear evidence of systematic violence and organizational command. For context on official designations, see the U.S. Department of State list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations at https://www.state.gov/foreign-terrorist-organizations/.
