When Is Memorial Day 2025?
Memorial Day 2025 is observed on Monday, May 26, 2025. It is a federal holiday held on the last Monday of May each year. The day honors U.S. military personnel who died while serving.
History and Purpose
Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday began after the Civil War to honor fallen soldiers. Over time it expanded to remember all Americans who died in military service. The National Memorial Day Concert and ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery are common observances. Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day
Memorial Day honors those who died in service, while Veterans Day on November 11 thanks all living veterans. On Memorial Day 2025, many visit cemeteries, attend parades, and observe a national moment of remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time. Some retailers hold sales, but the primary focus remains remembrance and gratitude.
