Kathleen Peterson was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their home in December 2001. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by blunt-force trauma.
Peterson was convicted of murder in 2003, but the case drew attention due to disputed evidence, including bloodstain patterns. In 2017, Judge Orlando Hudson allowed new forensic analysis, and Peterson later entered an Alford plea.
