What Is Syphilis Eye?

Syphilis eye refers to ocular involvement caused by the bacterial infection syphilis. The bacterium Treponema pallidum can affect almost any part of the eye, including the cornea, iris, retina, and optic nerve. It may occur at any stage of syphilis and can lead to vision changes or permanent vision loss if untreated.

Symptoms and Stages of Syphilis Eye

In early stages, syphilis eye may cause redness, blurred vision, or floaters. During secondary syphilis, uveitis or chorioretinitis can develop, leading to light sensitivity and decreased vision. In tertiary syphilis, gumma formation or optic nerve damage may occur, sometimes years after the initial infection. Symptoms can affect one or both eyes.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis involves eye examination, blood tests for syphilis, and sometimes imaging of the eye. Treatment typically includes antibiotics, most commonly penicillin, to eliminate the infection. Early treatment can prevent further eye damage, but existing vision loss may not be fully reversible. Follow-up with an eye specialist is essential.
