When Is Memorial Day This Year
Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May every year in the United States. It honors military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. The date changes annually, but it always falls on a Monday to create a three-day weekend.
Why Memorial Day Matters
The holiday originated after the Civil War to commemorate fallen soldiers. It became an official federal holiday in 1971. Communities across the country hold parades, ceremonies, and moments of silence to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
How Memorial Day Is Observed
Many Americans visit cemeteries, memorials, and veterans' graves. Flags are often placed on gravesites, and national ceremonies take place at sites like Arlington National Cemetery. Some families also use the long weekend for gatherings and early summer activities.
