Early Life and Wrongful Conviction

Steven Avery was born in 1962 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. In 1985 he was convicted of sexual assault and spent 18 years in prison before DNA evidence led to his exoneration and release in 2003.

Civil Lawsuit and Later Murder Charge

After his release, Avery filed a civil lawsuit against Manitowoc County, which was later settled. In 2005 he was arrested for the murder of Teresa Halbach. He was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Avery remains incarcerated at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Wisconsin. His legal team continues to pursue appeals and post-conviction motions, while his case remains widely discussed in true crime and legal circles. For more details, see the Wisconsin Department of Justice.
