Next Total Solar Eclipse in the United States
The next total solar eclipse visible across parts of America will occur on August 12, 2044. The path of totality will cross several northern states, offering viewers a chance to see the sun completely blocked by the moon for a short period.
Next Annular and Partial Eclipses
Before the 2044 total eclipse, an annular solar eclipse will pass over parts of the western United States on October 2, 2024, though the path of annularity is mostly over South America. Several partial solar eclipses will also be visible from North America in the coming years, including events in 2026 and 2028.
How to Safely View an Eclipse
Watching a solar eclipse safely requires certified eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers that meet international safety standards. Never look directly at the sun without proper protection, and follow guidance from astronomy organizations and public observatories.
