Where Did Subway Originate

Subway originated in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States. The first shop opened in 1965 under the name Pete's Super Submarines, founded by Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck. The business later became Subway and expanded across the U.S. before going global.

How Subway Began

Fred DeLuca started the restaurant at age 17 to help pay for college. Dr. Peter Buck provided the initial capital and business guidance. The concept focused on fresh, made-to-order sandwiches and healthier fast food compared to typical burger chains.

Global Expansion of Subway

Subway expanded rapidly during the 1970s and 1980s, first across the United States and then internationally. It became one of the world's largest restaurant chains by number of locations. Today Subway operates in many countries and regions outside the United States.
